The Oppia Enrichment Program … what is it?

Our Oppia Enrichment Program is based on the Finnish concept of “Sisu” – which means to show grit, determination, bravery or resilience and provides the children with opportunity to explore and develop all aspects of their Emotional Quotient (EQ).
Our Enrichment Program is supported by the following learning opportunities that encourage the children to reflect on and explore key concepts about themselves and others:
1) Kind Hearts Initiative – each term the children and families will have the opportunity to participate in service specific activities that will build awareness of the challenges that others may face, and the value that can lie in helping others. Oppia proudly supports several support services (and charities) who represent a broad cross section of the wider community, including – Monash Children’s Hospital, The Smith Family, Meals on Wheels, Little Life Treasures and People with Disability Australia.
2) Companions Club – our service pets will enable the children to experience the joys of having a pet and provide them with the knowledge and skills to care for the animals. Types of animals ideal for this program and it goals are those that children can cuddle, groom or hold (e.g. rabbits and guinea pigs).

3) First Footprints Program – Oppia is committed to ensuring that future generations inherit a healthy planet. As part of our overall approach, we look to minimise our service carbon footprint and educate the children about their own as they begin to leave their “first footprints” in the wider community. Recycle, Upcycle, Reduce and Reuse are the foundations of all that we do, and our First Footprints Program will enable the children (and families) to participate in opportunities to learn about preventative strategies, recycling behaviours and sustainable practices.

4) Open Hearts Initiative – Here at Oppia we believe that knowing who you are is important when discovering your potential…our Open Hearts Initiative provides the children with opportunities to practice important life skills such as – mindfulness, self-confidence, resilience, body awareness, personal safety, personal health and self-reliance. Regular activities such as – yoga, self-reflection, meditation, music, creative arts and the Oppia “I Can” program all help promote a stronger self-image.

5) Partnerships (in Practice) Program– here at Oppia we subscribe to the collaborative approach to learning – and truly believes “it takes a village to raise a child”. Our partnerships program provides the children with the opportunity to seek out, establish and grow connections within their local and wider community through a series of carefully planned incursions, excursions, buddy programs and extracurricular partnerships. We also believe that there is much that can be learnt from those who have come before us, and the children will be encouraged to reach out to local community members (including local aged persons) to learn more about and reflect on past, present and future endeavours.
6) One Family Program – this is a unified approach by the Oppia team to encourage families to feel comfortable when participating in Centre life. Families will be given as many opportunities as possible to participate in their child’s learning journey – including volunteering, regular social nights, family art sessions, annual art exhibition, termly learning discussions, information sessions.
