We are proud to announce that Oppia Wantirna South (formally known as Knox Childcare and Kindergrarten) is officially open for business.
Nestled in the leafy surrounds of Wantirna South, our boutique style, 60 place service boasts two thoughtfully designed outdoor yards and four light filled play rooms. Catering to children aged from 3 months to 5 years, our dedicated and experienced staff are waiting to welcome you and your child to our Oppia family!
Here at Oppia our mission is simple:
Our vision for our children is one of independent, confident young thinkers, eager to embrace their future potential.
Our vision for our ourselves is to provide inclusive, resource rich environments that nurture and promote individual potential.
At Oppia there is a strong focus on two key aspects of early learning that sets it apart from others in the industry:
Our Oppia Enrichment Program is based on the Finnish concept of “Sisu” – which means to show grit, determination, bravery or resilience and provides the children with the opportunity to explore and develop all aspects of their Emotional Quotient (EQ). Our Enrichment Program is supported by the following learning opportunities that encourage the children to reflect on and explore key concepts about themselves and others:
Our service pets will enable the children to experience the joys of having a pet and provide them with the knowledge and skills to care for the animals. Types of animals ideal for this program and it goals are those that children can cuddle, groom or hold (e.g. rabbits and guinea pigs).
Here at Oppia we believe that knowing who you are is important when discovering your potential…our Open Hearts Initiative provides the children with opportunities to practice important life skills such as – mindfulness, self-confidence, resilience, body awareness, personal safety, personal health and self- reliance. Regular activities such as – yoga, self-reflection, meditation, music, creative arts and the Oppia “I Can” program all help promote a stronger self-image.
Here at Oppia we subscribe to the collaborative approach to learning – and truly believes “it takes a village to raise a child”. Our partnerships program provides the children with the opportunity to seek out, establish and grow connections within their local and wider community through a series of carefully planned incursions, excursions, buddy programs and extracurricular partnerships. We also believe that there is much that can be learnt from those who have come before us, and the children will be encouraged to reach out to local community members (including local aged persons) to learn more about and reflect on past, present and future endeavours.
This is a unified approach by the Oppia team to encourage families to feel comfortable when participating in Centre life. Families will be given as many opportunities as possible to participate in their child’s learning journey – including volunteering, regular social nights, family art sessions, annual art exhibition, termly learning discussions, information sessions.
Drawing inspiration from the Early Years Approach of Finland, our Oppia way of learning is an inquiry based approach, with a strong focus on play. We believe in the benefits of a “holistc” approach to learning, where Emotional Quotient equals
Intelligence Quotient, or put more simply:
EQ = IQ
By nurturing both your child’s EQ and IQ skills together, we can support them to become more well rounded, self aware learners.
Inquiry based learning is a broad
pedagogical approach that begins with the teacher, or child posing questions, ideas or scenarios.
This leads to a child being encouraged to complete their own form of investigation before being encouraged to share their
ideas, findings or feedback with others.
We believe the elements of inquiry based learning-reflection, critical thinking and research are all crucial for promoting a child’s IQ skills.
The beautiful thing about learning is, no one can take it away from you
